Electrical appliances are a major source of house fires. Bathroom exhaust fans can cause house fires. Reduce the chances of a house fire by doing an exhaust fan checkup. The health of your exhaust fan is easy to determine. Evidence that your exhaust fan needs attention are discoloration, strange noises, odd smells, or slow starting. To reduce the odds of an exhaust fan fire, SERVPRO of South Tulsa County recommends doing the following checkup.
- Dust exhaust fan. To keep dust to a minimum, use canned air to help keep dust to a minimum. Run the fan while cleaning. This will help keep debris out of the way.
- Replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs. LEDs produce less heat and use less electricity. This will decrease the amount of heat produced and reducing the risk of fire.
- Clean dirt and debris from the duct work. Dirt and dust can accumulate in the duct work reducing the efficiency of the fan. The build up may cause the fan motor to work harder, creating more heat, and cause a fire.
- Use a timer switch to reduce the run time of the exhaust fan. Running the fan for hours may overheat causing a fire. To help reduce the chance of a fire, use the fan for 20 minutes or less.
- Wash the plastic cover with warm soapy water. Remove dirt and dust built up on the vents will help improve the fans efficiency. Remember to completely dry the faceplate before re-installing it.
